Canadians Need This Parliament to Work

Labour Supports the Idea of a Liberal-NDP Coalition if Conservative Government Falls

OTTAWA - The President of the Canadian Labour Congress says if the Conservatives are unwilling to make Parliament work and refuse to provide Canadians with the government they need to weather the deepening economic crisis, they should be defeated.

"Canadians elected a minority parliament. They did not give the Conservatives a majority to do as they please, and they certainly did not give them a mandate to engage in the brutally partisan politics they have unleashed. They did not just go through a federal election - called early by the Conservatives because the last parliament was 'dysfunctional' - and re-elect a new parliament just to have the Conservatives blow it up," says Ken Georgetti.

Georgetti says that Canadians, worried about their jobs and livelihoods, expected all political parties to work together in the current economic environment. The events of the past few days make it clear that the Conservatives are unwilling to do that.

"Instead of delivering an economic plan to lead our country through hard times, they took advantage of the current situation to make a grab for political power and shove their own agenda right down people's throats. They took advantage of Canadians' vulnerability to attack the constitutional rights of citizens and hobble their political opponents. Instead making the current minority parliament work, they have deliberately poisoned it. Canadians expected better. Canadians deserve better than this," says Georgetti.

Georgetti says that if the Conservatives are unwilling to make the new parliament work, then it is up to the other three parties to try. He says spending $300 million on another election is the last thing Canadians need right now.

"We need this parliament to work. The Liberals and the NDP, with the support of the Bloc Quebecois, need to come together so Canadians can have a government that is willing to see the economic crisis for what it is and provide people with the help they need. When that happens, we will all be better off," says Georgetti.

The Canadian Labour Congress, the national voice of the labour movement, represents 3.2 million Canadian workers. The CLC brings together Canada's national and international unions along with the provincial and territorial federations of labour and more than 130 district labour councils.
